At 0948 hours on May 31st, MFD was dispatched to a reported gas main leak at the Valley Central Middle School. Upon arrival, Car 1 (Pressler) and Engine 223 found a large outdoor gas main actively leaking. Due to the extremely large amount of gas being discharged and its proximity to the school building, Car 1 requested Central Hudson to the scene along with a tanker task force to the VCHS parking lot for staging. The task force brought tankers from Wallkill, Maybrook, Walden, Coldenham, and Bullville to the scene while Pine Bush and Mechanicstown stood by at MFD to cover any additional alarms. A tanker relay system was set up to prepare for any ignition of the gas until Central Hudson arrived and shut the gas main down about 45 minutes after the initial call. The leak was safely stopped without any injuries or further damage and the school will still be set to open on time on Monday.
